Answer

Filtering the mobile phase is preferably done using non-metal inlet filters. Metal filters are not allowed as they may introduce Fe-ions in the mobile phase that result in high background current. Additional advantage of the non-metal filters is that they are available with very small pore size (0.2 µm) and are therefore anti-bacterial and to some extent trap air bubbles.

The filters that are supplied with the ALEXYS system are either ‘aqueous’ or ‘solvent’ (for high % modifier) type. Important detail is to cut tubing at an angle, otherwise the flow of liquid may be blocked!
