F\u00fcr die Detektion werden Durchflusszellen und Elektroden verwendet, die miniaturisiert werden k\u00f6nnen, so dass sie f\u00fcr Standard- bis Nano-HPLC geeignet sind. In Kombination mit der richtigen Elektronik hat ECD einen enormen linearen Dynamikbereich von mehr als 7 Gr\u00f6\u00dfenordnungen. Eine Probe wird in die HPLC gegeben und auf der chromatographischen S\u00e4ule getrennt. Die S\u00e4ule ist mit einer ECD-Zelle verbunden, einem elektrochemischen Sensor, bei dem eine Reaktion an einer Elektrode stattfindet. Elektrochemisch aktive Substanzen, die von der S\u00e4ule eluiert werden, durchlaufen eine elektrochemische Reaktion, bei der Elektronen \u00fcbertragen werden und ein elektrischer Strom entsteht.
